# AI Assistant & Universal Editor
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/ai-assistant
Jeannie is your AI Assistant and intelligent co-creative writing partner
Beyond research and fact-checking, Jeannie can directly edit your documents—rewriting, restructuring, expanding, or refining your text on command.
## What Makes It Universal
Jeannie can make virtually any edit to your document:
* **Rewrite** - Change tone, style, or voice
* **Restructure** - Reorganize paragraphs and sections
* **Expand** - Add detail, examples, or explanations
* **Condense** - Shorten while preserving meaning
* **Transform** - Convert between formats (bullets to prose, etc.)
* **Improve** - Fix issues while maintaining your intent
## **Starting a Conversation**
To start a conversation with the Jeannie, go to the AI Chat and start typing!
## **Making Edits**
"Make this paragraph more concise" "Add a transition sentence"
"Convert this list to prose"
"Make the tone more professional"
"Rewrite the introduction to be more engaging"
"Expand the third paragraph with examples"
"Simplify the jargon in section 2"
"Make the whole document conversational"
"Add subheadings to break up sections"
"Ensure consistent terminology throughout"
## **How Edits Work**
AI reads your document and understands your request
It identifies specific changes to make
Changes are applied directly to your document
You can undo, adjust, or request refinements
## **Example Workflows**
### **Changing Tone**
> ***You:***\_ "This email sounds too harsh. Make it more diplomatic while keeping the key points."\_
>
> ***AI:***\_ Rewrites the email with softer language, suggests diplomatic phrasing\_
### **Expanding Content**
> ***You:***\_ "The benefits section is too thin. Expand it with three concrete examples and use the web search tool to find them."\_
>
> ***AI:***\_ Adds detailed examples with supporting details\_
### **Restructuring**
> ***You:***\_ "This reads like a wall of text. Break it into clear sections with headers and vary the size of the paragaphs to make it more organic."\_
>
> ***AI:***\_ Reorganizes content, adds descriptive headings\_
### **Format Conversion**
> ***You:***\_ "Convert these meeting notes into a professional summary email."\_
>
> ***AI:***\_ Transforms bullet points into well-structured email format\_
## **Tips for Effective Editing**
### **Be Clear About Intent**
* ❌ "Fix this"
* ✅ "Make this introduction grab the reader's attention with a compelling hook"
### **Provide Context**
* ❌ "Make it better"
* ✅ "This is for a job application—make it sound confident but not arrogant"
### **Iterate**
Sometimes you strike gold right away but don't expect perfection on the first try. Sometimes working with AI is about iteration and refining your prompt again and again until you get what you want:
1. Make an initial request
2. Review the changes
3. Ask for refinements: "Good, but make the ending stronger by looping back to the initial points in the opening sections and driving them home."
## **What the AI Can Edit**
* **Prose** - Articles, essays, reports, emails
* **Creative writing** - Stories, scripts, marketing copy
* **Technical content** - Documentation, specifications
* **Business writing** - Proposals, presentations, memos
* **Academic writing** - Papers, abstracts, literature reviews
## **Undoing Changes**
If an edit isn't what you wanted:
* Use **Undo** to revert
* Ask the AI to try again with different guidance
* Request specific adjustments to the edit
# AI Chat
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/ai-chat
This is where you chat with Jeannie, your AI assistant. She's here to help with everything from proofreading to deep research. Access the chat by tapping the blue AI button on the top right of the Editor, or by hitting the AI tab at the bottom of the app.
Here's what you'll see in the chat:
* Document name in the top left in blue. Drop down here to change which document you want to talk about.
* Thread name on the top left. Drop down to switch threads, edit the name, or delete it.
* Preview of the document you're discussing. Drop down to see more of that document
* Chat panel where you can see all your messages with Jeannie.
* Chat box where you can type messages to Jeannie.
* Model selection drop down.
* @ : use to call documents to give Jeannie additional context.
Feel free to chat with Jeannie about anything! Ask her questions, request rewrites, or have her review your work - she's here to help.
Just like in the Editor, Jeannie has four specialties she can help you with:
* **Proofread:** Review your writing for spelling and grammar errors using context
* **Fact Check:** Verify all claims in your writing with cited sources
* **Deep Research:** Create detailed reports using OpenAI's Deep Research tool
* **Web Search:** Find specific details or stats
## **Using Results in Your Document**
After reviewing your search results, you have three ways to use the information:
Copy the entire response to your clipboard. Paste into other apps, emails, or anywhere outside Inkstone.
Add results directly to your document. Ideal for incorporating facts or quotes into your current work.
Generate a new document with the results. Perfect for saving research separately or building a reference collection.
# AI Editing
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/ai-editing
Ask Jeannie to rewrite your work, just chat with her like you would a colleague! Type your request, and she'll work her magic. The new text pops up as a suggestion waiting for your approval. Don't worry, Jeannie will never make direct edits without your approval.
Want to give Jeannie even more context? Just use @ to pull in any document from any project. It's a great way to help Jeannie understand exactly what you're going for, all without breaking your flow or leaving what you're working on.
Examples:
* "Is my tone consistent in the intro of this doc and @OtherDoc?"
* "Ensure the points argued in this doc don't contradict what I said in @OtherDoc."
## Iterate
Working with AI is all about iteration. Refine your prompt again and again until you get exactly what you want. It's totally normal, and honestly, that's where the magic happens:
1. Make an initial request.
2. Review the changes.
3. Ask for refinements: "Good, but make the ending stronger by looping back to the initial points in the opening sections and driving them home."
## Undoing Changes
If an edit isn't quite right:
* Use **Undo** to revert.
* Ask the AI to try again with different guidance.
* Request specific adjustments to the edit.
# AI Threads
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/ai-threads
Think of threads as ongoing conversations with Jeannie. Each thread maintains context, so you can have ongoing discussions about your research and writing. Think of them as chat conversations that remember what you've discussed, can be revisited anytime, and stay attached to your project.
Want to start a new thread? Just head to the AI chat panel and click that blue **+**.
### Thread Naming
Threads are automatically named based on your first query or the type of tool you used. A Deep Research about productivity might become "Evidence-based focus strategies." This makes it easy to scan your thread list and find what you're looking for.
### Renaming Your Threads
Quickly rename your threads by opening the thread dropdown and hitting the to the right of the thread name. Press **Enter** to save the new name.
### Archiving Your Threads

# AI Threads
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/docspage/ai-tools/ai-threads
AI Threads are where you can view your conversations with Jeannie, the AI assistant in each project.
AI Threads are found in Inkstone under the icon in the right-hand panel.
Threads are associated with projects, so when you alternate between projects, you will see a different set of threads or a new, blank thread if you don't have any historical threads in that project or if it is a new project.
Threads appear like tabs in the AI panel for each project. Each thread maintains context, so you can have ongoing discussions about your research and writing. Think of them as chat conversations that remember what you've discussed, can be revisited anytime, and stay attached to your project.
## **Creating Threads**
If you use the AI icons on the Tool Panel, threads are created automatically when you start a Deep Research query, run a Web Search, use Proofreading or Fact Checking. By default, research tools open in a new thread—you can uncheck "Open in new thread" to continue in your current conversation instead.
## **Working with Thread Tabs**
Open threads appear as tabs at the top of the AI panel, indicated by a blue underline. Click any tab to switch to that conversation. New threads open to the right of existing tabs, so you can have multiple research threads open at once and switch between them as needed.
Closing a tab (click the **×**) just hides the thread from view. You can always reopen it later from the dropdown, by clicking the icon to see historical threads.
## **Finding Your Threads**
The dropdown menu shows all threads in your project. Select any thread to open it in a new tab. This is useful for returning to earlier research or continuing a conversation you closed.
## **Thread Naming**
Threads are automatically named based on your first query or the type of tool you used. A Deep Research about productivity might become "Evidence-based focus strategies." This makes it easy to scan your thread list and find what you're looking for.
## **Renaming Your Threads**
Quickly rename your threads by opening the thread dropdown and hitting the icon to the right of the thread name. Press Enter to save the new name.
## **Archiving Your Threads**
You can easily archive your threads by opening the thread dropdown and hitting the icon to the right of the thread name.
## **Continuing Conversations**
Because threads maintain context, you can ask follow-up questions without re-explaining what you're working on. Ask "Tell me more about the economic factors" and Jeannie knows you're still discussing the French Revolution from earlier in the conversation.
> ***You:***\_ What are the main causes of the French Revolution?\_
>
> ***AI:***\_ \[Provides detailed response about causes]\_
>
> ***You:***\_ Tell me more about the economic factors.\_
>
> ***AI:***\_ \[Expands on economic causes, knowing the context]\_
## **Threads and Projects**
Threads belong to your project, not individual documents. All documents in a project share the same threads, so research you do for one document is accessible from any other document in that project. This makes it easy to build up a library of research that supports your entire project..
## Change the Model
You can choose to work with Claude Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 or GPT-5.2. We've set Claude as the default to get you started, but feel free to switch things up anytime using the dropdown menu right in the chat.

# Deep Research
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/docspage/ai-tools/deep-research
Deep Research is one Inkstone's most powerful AI tools.
Deep Research performs comprehensive, multi-step research on any topic and delivers cited, well-organized results.
## What Deep Research Does
Unlike simple web searches, Deep Research is a longer procress where the agent loops through sources, checks them, makes notes and compiles a final document.
How it works:
* AI analyzes your query to understand what you're really asking
* Searches multiple sources for comprehensive coverage
* Synthesizes information into a coherent response
* Provides citations so you can verify sources
* Organizes findings into a readable format
## **Starting Deep Research**
1. Head to the **AI** menu in the toolbar or simply ask the agent in the chat window to use the deep research tool
2. Select **Deep Research** or the icon
3. Enter your research query
4. Choose whether to open results in a new thread (recommended) or current thread
5. Press **Enter** or click the search button
## **Writing Effective Queries**
The better your query, the better your results. More detailed prompts with lots of context information get the best results. AI cannot infer your intentions if you don't make them explicit.
### **Good queries are specific:**
* ❌ "Tell me about exercise"
* ✅ "What are the top 5 under-desk exercise bikes for improving health while working, with cited evidence for their effectiveness?"
### **Include context when helpful:**
* ❌ "Best practices"
* ✅ "Best practices for React component testing with Jest and React Testing Library"
### **Ask for what you need:**
* ❌ "Productivity tips"
* ✅ "What are evidence-based strategies for eating well and staying healthy. Cite peer-reviewed research and reputable online sources. No fad diets."
## **Understanding Results**
Deep Research results include:
* **Summary** - Key findings at a glance
* **Detailed analysis** - In-depth exploration of the topic
* **Citations** - Links to source material
* **Related topics** - Suggestions for further research
## **Using Results in Your Document**
You can easily add research to your document:
1. Review the research results in the AI panel
2. Use the buttons at the bottom of the chat output to insert into the main document, copy it to the clipboard or create a new document
3. Or ask the AI to help you incorporate the findings
## **Opening in New Thread vs. Current Thread**
If you use the button to launch deep research, you have the option to open in a new thread or the current thread.
* **New Thread** (default) - Creates a dedicated thread for this research. Best for topics you want to reference later.
* **Current Thread** - Adds research to your existing conversation. Best for follow-up questions.
## **Tips for Best Results**
1. **Be specific** - Narrow queries get focused answers
2. **Provide context** - Mention your purpose or audience
3. **Ask follow-ups** - Deep Research remembers context within a thread
4. **Verify citations** - Always check important sources
5. **Iterate** - Refine your query based on initial results
## **Limitations**
* Research quality depends on available online sources
* Breaking news may not be covered perfectly until our search engine provider indexes the results but, in general, results are very up to date and very recent
* Technical or niche topics may have limited sources
* AI can and does make mistakes (just like people). Always verify critical information independently!
## **Next Steps**
* [**Web Search**](/docspage/ai-tools/web-search) - For quick, current information
* [**Proof Reading**](/docspage/ai-tools/proofreading) - Verify claims in your writing

# Fact Checking
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/docspage/ai-tools/fact-checking
Fact Checking verifies claims, statistics, and citations in your writing to help ensure accuracy.
Each card includes links that look to prove or disprove the results. You should independently verify results yourself and consider the veracity of each source if the document has legal, business, medical or other important facts that you want to get right, but fact-checking will get you moving quickly in the right direction with sources found on the web and analyzed for each claim.
## **What Fact Checking Does**
The fact checker:
* Identifies claims and statements in your text
* Searches for supporting or contradicting evidence
* Provides verification status for each claim
* Links to sources for further review
## **Starting Fact Checking**
There are two ways to start fact checking:
### **From the Toolbar**
1. Write or paste content containing claims you want to verify
2. Head to the **AI** menu in the toolbar
3. Select **Fact Check** or hit the icon
4. In the AI panel, the AI will analyze your document and check claims
5. Fact Check column will appear to the left of the AI panel highlighting each claim it has fact checked in the document.
### **From the Assistant**
You can also ask the AI Assistant directly: *"Fact check my document"* or *"Verify the claims in this article."* The Assistant knows how to call the fact checking tool and will run the analysis for you.
## **Understanding Results**
For each claim in your document, the fact checker identifies the statement, searches for evidence, and assigns a status. You'll see the original claim, supporting or contradicting evidence found online, and links to sources so you can verify for yourself.
Evidence supports the claim
Conflicting information found
Cannot find reliable sources
Subjective statement, not factual
Information that is referenced within the document, but not directly stated
## **What Gets Checked**
Numbers, percentages, and data points
Statements attributed to people
Dates, events, and people
Research findings and studies
Recent news and developments
## **What Doesn't Get Checked**
Some statements are inherently unverifiable—personal opinions, future predictions, hypothetical scenarios, creative writing, and subjective experiences. The fact checker focuses on objective, verifiable claims rather than matters of perspective.
## **Acting on Results**
Once you have your fact-check results, take a moment to review the sources the AI found. If a claim is marked as disputed or unverified, you'll want to decide whether to correct it, add a citation to strengthen it, or remove it entirely. For verified claims, consider adding the source reference to your document so readers can check for themselves.
Remember that "unverified" doesn't necessarily mean false—it just means the AI couldn't find reliable sources to confirm it. You may have specialized knowledge or access to sources the AI doesn't.
## **Getting Better Results**
The more specific your claims, the easier they are to verify. A statement like "sales increased significantly" is harder to check than "sales increased 23% in Q3 2024." If you already have sources for your claims, the fact checker can verify them more quickly and accurately.
It's worth running fact check before you publish rather than after. Catching an inaccuracy early saves you from corrections later—and protects your credibility with readers.
## **Keep in Mind**
The fact checker can't access paywalled content, so academic papers behind journal paywalls or premium news articles may not be available for verification. Very recent events (within the last few days) may not have enough indexed sources yet. Regional facts or niche industry statistics can also be harder to verify simply because there's less publicly available information.
And while the AI is thorough, it interprets claims the way it reads them. If your intended meaning differs from how the statement reads literally, the verification might not match your expectations.

However, fact-checking will get you moving quickly in the right direction with sources found on the web and analyzed for each claim.
## **What Gets Checked**
Numbers, percentages, and data points
Statements attributed to people
Dates, events, and people
Research findings and studies
Recent news and developments
## **What Doesn't Get Checked**
Some statements are inherently unverifiable—personal opinions, future predictions, hypothetical scenarios, creative writing, and subjective experiences. The fact checker focuses on objective, verifiable claims rather than matters of perspective.
## **Acting on Results**
Once you have your fact-check results, take a moment to review the sources Jeannie found. If a claim is marked as disputed or unverified, you'll want to decide whether to correct it, add a citation to strengthen it, or remove it entirely. For verified claims, consider adding the source reference to your document so readers can check for themselves.
Remember that "unverified" doesn't necessarily mean false—it just means Jeannie couldn't find reliable sources to confirm it. You may have specialized knowledge or access to sources the AI doesn't.
## **Keep in Mind**
The fact checker can't access paywalled content, so academic papers behind journal paywalls or premium news articles may not be available for verification. Very recent events (within the last few days) may not have enough indexed sources yet. Regional facts or niche industry statistics can also be harder to verify simply because there's less publicly available information..
And while the AI is thorough, it interprets claims the way it reads them. If your intended meaning differs from how the statement reads literally, the verification might not match your expectations.
# Proof Reading

Go beyond spell check
Proofreading analyzes your writing and suggests improvements for grammar, style, clarity, and tone.
## **What Proofreading Checks**
This is far more than a basic spell checker. The AI proofreader deeply analyzes your writing to find:
* **Grammar** - Subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, punctuation errors
* **Missing words** - Accidentally omitted words that break sentence flow
* **Spelling** - Typos, misspellings, and incorrect word usage
* **Style** - Wordiness, passive voice, clichés, awkward phrasing
* **Clarity** - Confusing sentences, ambiguous references, unclear meaning
* **Consistency** - Formatting, capitalization, terminology throughout
## **Starting Proofreading**
There are two ways to start proofreading:
### **From the Toolbar**
1. Write or paste your content into the document
2. Head to the **AI** section in the toolbar
3. Select **Proofreading** or hit the icon
4. Jeannie will analyze your document
5. You can see this process happening in the AI panel
6. Jeannie will provide suggestions. You choose to accept/reject them
### **From the Assistant**
You can also just ask Jeannie directly: *"Proofread my document"* or *"Check this for grammar and style."* Jeannie knows how to call the proofreading tool and will run the analysis for you. This is convenient when you're already in a conversation and want a quick check. You can give Jeannie special instructions like "**remove any extra paragraph breaks and any double spacing after the period**". Jeannie knows how to call the proofreading tool and will run the analysis for you. This is convenient when you're already in a conversation and want a quick check.
## **While Proofreading Runs**
When proofreading is active, you'll see a progress indicator at the bottom of your document. Jeannie analyzes your text section by section, checking for issues across grammar, style, and clarity. You can continue reading your document while it works.
## **Understanding Suggestions**
Proofreading suggestions appear in the AI panel with:
* **The issue** - What was found
* **Location** - Where in the document
* **Suggestion** - How to fix it
* **Explanation** - Why it matters
* **Accept**/**Reject** - Choose to accept/reject the suggestions individually or all at once
Proofreading suggestions appear right in the document Editor panel with **red strikethroughs for deletions** and **green letters to indicate inserted or changed text**:
* **Accept**/**Reject** - Choose to accept/reject the suggestions individually or all at once:
## **Applying Suggestions**
When the proofreader finds an issue, you'll see a suggestion bar with options to accept or reject the change. For each suggestion, you can:
1. **Accept** - Apply the change to your document
2. **Reject** - Keep your original text
3. **Modify** - Use the suggestion as a starting point
## **Types of Suggestions**
### **Grammar Fixes**
> *❌ "The team are working on it." ✅ "The team is working on it."*
### **Clarity Improvements**
> *❌ "It is important to note that the aforementioned items should be considered." ✅ "Consider these items."*
### **Style Refinements**
> *❌ "The report was written by the team." ✅ "The team wrote the report."*
### **Consistency Corrections**
> *❌ Using both "e-mail" and "email" in the same document ✅ Consistent use of "email" throughout*
## **Customizing Proofreading**
You can guide the proofreader by mentioning:
* **Tone** - "Check for formal/casual tone"
* **Audience** - "This is for technical readers"
* **Focus** - "Focus on grammar only"
* **Style guide** - "Follow AP style"
## **Tips for Best Results**
1. **Be patient with long documents** - Jeannie intelligently loops through your entire document, catching issues throughout. Longer documents may take a minute or two, but there's no need to break them into sections yourself.
2. **Jeannie is fast and calls tools in parallel but for very long documents be patient** - AI intelligently loops through your entire document, catching issues throughout. Longer documents may take a minute or two, but there's no need to break them into sections yourself.
3. **Multiple passes** - Run proofreading again after major edits to catch any new issues
4. **Context matters** - Some suggestions may not fit your intended style or voice
5. **Trust your voice** - Don't accept every suggestion blindly; you know your writing best

# Web Search
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/docspage/ai-tools/web-search
Web Search finds current information from the web in real-time.
Use Web Search for recent news, current data, or quick fact lookups.
Web Search is ideal for:
* **Current events** - News and recent developments and articles
* **Quick facts** - Dates, statistics, definitions
* **Real-time data** - Stock prices, weather, scores
* **Verification** - Checking if something is accurate
For comprehensive research on complex topics, use [**Deep Research**](/docspage/ai-tools/deep-research) instead. To get advanced fact-checking on multiple claims, use [**Fact-checking**](docspage/ai-tools/fact-checking).
## **Starting a Web Search**
1. Head to the **AI** menu in the toolbar
2. Ask the AI in the chat panel to do a web search OR select the **Web Search** button on the tool panel with the icon
3. Enter your search query
4. Choose whether to open results in a new thread or current thread
5. Press **Enter** or click the search button
## **Writing Effective Queries**
Web Search works best with direct, specific queries:
### **Good queries:**
* "What was the population of Tokyo in 1976 and compare it to the population in 2025"
* "What's the latest iPhone software version and are people reporting lots of bugs?"
* "Who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature and tell me their history"
## **Understanding Results**
When your search completes, Jeannie displays the results directly in the conversation panel. The response typically includes a direct answer to your question, synthesized from multiple web sources. You'll see the key information presented in a clear, readable format—no need to click through multiple links yourself.
Jeannie formats the results intelligently in Markdown, often organizing information with headings, bullet points, or numbered lists depending on the type of query. For factual questions, you'll get a concise answer. For more complex topics, the response includes relevant context and background information to help you understand the full picture.
Each result includes source citations so you can verify the information or dive deeper into any topic that interests you by clicking the links.
You can ask Jeannie to put the results right into your document or to intelligently use the information in the results to write something new or create a table or anything you can imagine.
## **Using Results in Your Document**
After reviewing your search results, you have three ways to use the information:
Copy the entire response to your clipboard. Paste into other apps, emails, or anywhere outside Inkstone.
Add results directly at your cursor position. Ideal for incorporating facts or quotes into your current work.
Generate a new document with the results. Perfect for saving research separately or building a reference collection.
### **The Result**
Once inserted or created, the content becomes regular editable text. You can format it, trim it down, expand on certain points, or use it as a starting point for your own writing. Jeannie remains available in the same thread if you need follow-up searches or want to refine the information further.

# Documents
Source: https://docs.inkstone.pro/docspage/projects/working-with-documents
Documents live inside projects and contain all your writing and research. You can have as many documents as you need.
## **Creating a Document**
Navigate to the project where you want to create a new document in left sidebar. Click **New Document** under the project name. The new document is opened and saved as Untitled Docuement.
Each document has a **⋮** menu with the usual options: **Rename**, **Share**, **Move To,** **Archive**.
## **Renaming**
You have three options:
1. Click the title at the top of the editor and type a new name. It saves when you click away.
2. In the sidebar, hit the menu icon next to the current document title, and select **Rename**. Press Enter to save.
3. Ask the assistant to rename your document!
Name your documents something useful. "Chapter 3 - The Confrontation" beats "doc3" when you're scanning through a list at midnight.
## **Sharing Documents for Collaboration**
Navigate to the document name in the left panel. Tap the and select **Share**. Then enter the email address of the person you want to share the document with. \
**Note**: this person must be an Inkstone user.\
You can revoke access to your document at any time, by clicking the icon next to the person's name.
## **Auto-Save**
Everything saves automatically. The "Edited 5 minutes ago" timestamp at the top right above the tool bar tells you when the last save happened. You don't need to think about saving.
## **Printing**
The **Print** button in the toolbar opens your browser's print dialog. You can print to paper or save as PDF—whatever your browser supports.
## Archiving
To delete a document, simply click the menu next to the document title in the left sidebar, and select archive. This will delete the document from your view.
## Restoring
If you deleted a document that you want to use again, you can restore it.
Select "Restore" from the menu on the top of the sidebar on the left.
A panel will populate on the right of the screen with all your archived projects. First, you will see the list of archived projects. Scrolling down, you will see all the documents you have archived. Alternatively you can search the document by name.
Once you find the document you want to restore, just click restore and it will reappear within the project where it used to be.
## **Working Across Documents**
A common pattern: keep research and notes in one document, your actual draft in another. Use the AI assistant to pull ideas together, or just copy and paste between them.
